‘So fearful a noise’ — Rebel Yell

The “Rebel Yell,” popular at many sporting events has deep confederate roots. Originally the yell was Started by Confederate companies to intimidate Union soldier. According to Yankees, no one yelled like that unless they were going to kill someone. The yell soon gained popularity throughout the Confederate army. Though today, it’s only used at sporting events, one might say the “Rebel Yell” was the south’s battle cry.

Key Takeaways:

  • One thing that most people in the SEC do at a game had its origin in the days of the Civil War.
  • We in the South have a distinct “yell” that we do at all sporting events.
  • Even though the Ole Miss Rebel Nation would like to call the “Rebel Yell” our own, a great many fans who are not an Ole Miss Rebels use it.
