Political correctness run amok

Today, it seems that anything that is deemed offensive by one person must be prohibited. A campaign named the Coddle My Kid campaign is sweeping the nation. In its wake, two literary classics, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, have been banned from a school district in Virginia. The reason is because a racial slur is used in both books. It is argued that the purpose of these books is to bring these topics to light and discuss them and show that it is not okay to use racial slurs when referring to a minority.

Key Takeaways:

  • We are fostering a society that cannot accept criticism, especially when it comes to race. The author (a black educator) has a unique perspective on the matter.
  • Parents are concerned about books, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Huckleberry Finn, for having the n-word. The educator/author doesn’t think it benefits children to shelter them away from historical terms and literature.
  • If we censor everything, we are on a slippery slope to wiping out history.

“The inclination to coddle young people and protect their fragile sensibilities is growing by the day, and now, it has hit home in a way that bears further criticism.”
